Background and Description
Award-winning Pure Brass is a vibrant, young and well established brass quintet who looks to bring top class music making to people of all ages throughout Scotland and further afield. Formed in 2006 at the RSAMD, the group has quickly become a prominent ensemble within the Scottish chamber music scene. Pure Brass is part of the prestigious Live Music Now! Scheme and Enterprise Music Scotland Residency Project, which will lead towards a commission and concert tour around Scotland. This year has seen Pure Brass win the RSAMD Governors Chamber Music Prize, which subsequently was made into a recording for BBC Radio Scotland, the Mary D Adams Prize for chamber music and the Norman Cooper Chamber Music Competition.
Pure Brass has performed in solo recitals throughout the UK; examples include the Aberdeen International Music Festival and St. Mary’s Metropolitan Cathedral as part of the Edinburgh Fringe to name but a few. Away from classical recitals, Pure Brass has been seen letting their hair down at Coldplay’s recent gig at Hampden Park as part of Oxjam and recording horn parts for pop bands. The group has a great ability to make any event perfect, with a wide variety of music which can be tailored to your needs. Pure Brass has many of their own music arrangements and gladly welcome requests. Whether it be a glitzy champagne reception or a jazzy party, Pure Brass have music for all occasions.

’Altogether these virtuoso performers presented a concert stunning in its impact with music absolutely fitting the pomp and joy of the occasion. Scarcely can the venerable space ever have resonated with more thrilling sound. The moods of the four movements of Scheidt’s Battle Suite were finely distinguished, the Canzonetto blazing, the Galliard jolly, the Courant doleful, and the Bergamasue glorious. Pure Brass lightened the mood to end the programme with four works by Jim Parker, entitled the Golden Section. The Bullfight was Spanish in flavour, La Parade amusing, Dejeuner sur L’Herbe languid, Night Hawks raucous, squawky and drunken, all good fun.’
Perthshire Advertiser Sept 2008
’On Saturday afternoon Pure Brass, a quintet of gifted young musicians from Glasgow playing under the auspices of Live Music Now, presented a widely varied sequence of pieces ranging from the 17th century to Peter Maxwell Davies and Irving Berlin.
Their versatility and good humour place them almost beyond praise for a display of ingenious and infectious music making.’
